Cincinnati moves to 6-9, Washington falls to 8-7. The Redskins can’t win the NFC East, and the loss also clinches the East for the Eagles, since Dallas would lose to Philly on the divisional record tiebreaker, with the Eagles finishing 6-2 in the division. The Cowboys can do no better than 5-3.

    NFL 1979, Week 9: Philadelphia 10, Cincinnati 7

Not too many experts were calling for a defensive struggle, but that’s exactly what they got at Riverfront Stadium as the Eagles nip the Bengals 10-7 with a Tony Franklin 32 yard FG with 40 seconds to go.

Ron Jaworski was the game MVP, passing for 187 yards on 18 completions on 29 attempts, one completion went for a TD.

    NFL 1979, Week 8: Cleveland 21, Cincinnati 20

In a strange coaching decision, the Bengals opted to kick a FG with 1:40 left in the 4th quarter to cut a 21-17 deficit to 21-20.  Cleveland recovered the onside kick, leaving the Bengals with a minimal amount of time on the clock after the Browns went three-and-out, forcing the Bengals to exhaust their timeouts.  The Bengals couldn’t get a deciding score, so the Browns eeked out the win.

Brian Sipe, the Cleveland quarterback, won the player of the game honors.  He threw for 212 yards, completing 20 of 28 passes, one for a touchdown.

    Both teams are now 3-5.

    NFL 1979, Week 7: Pittsburgh 34, Cincinnati 28

Great game at Riverfront Stadium between the Steelers and Bengals.  The Bengals had the defending champions on the ropes for sure with a 28-24 lead early in the 4th quarter.  But the Steelers kept their pride and showed their poise, rallying back for the 34-28 win.

Terry Bradshaw won the game’s MVP award, with 311 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception, completing 20 of his 33 passes.

The Steelers stay undefeated at 7-0, the Bengals fall to 3-4.
